Mary Calendar – October

The following dates are important in October:

1 October

The beginning of the Rosary Month. In the 19th century, Pope Leo XIII, Pope from 1878 to 1903, extended the celebration of the victory at the Battle of Lepanto on 7 October 1571 by praying the Rosary throughout the entire month of October. This is how October became the Rosary Month.

2 October

2 October 1994: Coronation of the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church of the pilgrimage site “Iglesia de la Virgen de la Fuensanta” (Church of Our Lady of the Holy Spring) in Cordoba, Spain.

6 October

Inauguration of the Esplanade in Beauraing (1968).

7 October

“Our Lady of the Holy Rosary” has been the official name of this feast day since 1969. On this day, the Blessed Virgin Mary is honoured as the protectress of Christendom. The communal recitation of the Rosary is a powerful tool for believers to avert great disaster. The feast day dates back to 7 October 1571, the day of the Battle of Lepanto.

13 October

Sixth and final apparition of Mary in Fátima, Portugal (1917). Our Lady shows the Miracle of the Sun.

13 October

13 October 1949: Pius XII, Pope from 1939 to 1958, born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli (1876-1958), declares the Madonna of Ghisallo the patron saint of Italian cyclists.

16 October

16 October 1953: The pilgrimage church in Werl, Germany, is elevated to the status of a basilica by Pius XII, Pope from 1939-1958, born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli (1876-1958).

17 October

The Diocese of Vicenza recognises the “Cenacolo di Preghiera” as a place of prayer in the Italian town of Schio (2017).

18 October

18 October 1967: apparition to Aloisia Lex (1907-1984) in Eisenberg an der Raab, Austria. Our Lady says that the world is facing a terrible atomic war, which will bring disaster and destruction.

20 October

20 October (1895): consecration of the Lourdes Grotto in the Flemish Meersel-Dreef by Leopoldus Godefridus Pelckmans (1854-1904) of Turnhout, bishop of the Capuchin mission in Lahore, Pakistan.

22nd October

22nd October 1988: consecration of the pilgrimage church in Siekierki (Warsaw), Poland, by Zbigniew Józef Kraszewski (1922-2004), auxiliary bishop of Warsaw (1970-2004).

24th October

24 October 1673: Foundation of the Congregation of Marians in Poland by Stanislaw (Jan) Papczyński (1631-1701). He was beatified in 2007 and canonised in 2016.

25 October

In the German town of Heroldsbach, Maria asks the visionaries to have a Mother of God chapel built (1949).

26th October

26 October 1986: Laying of the foundation stone of the Bernadette Church in Lourdes.

27 October

In Schio, Italy, Maria says to Renato Baron: “I'm here to bring you peace and love” (1986).

28 October

28 October 1993: The Pilgrimage Church in Mariatrost, Austria, is elevated to the status of a basilica.

30th October

30 October 1867: Bernadette Soubirous takes her vows at the convent in Nevers. In 1858, she met Mary 18 times in Lourdes.

31 October

Pius XII, Pope from 1939 to 1958, is the first Pope to openly speak about the importance of the apparitions in Fátima. He consecrates the world to the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady and is known as the first Fátima Pope (1942).

31 October

31 October 1952: Maria's last appearance in Heroldsbach, Germany.
