Rotterdam – Chapel of Mary

In the City Church Het Steiger Sint Dominicus there is a special chapel dedicated to Mary.

The name of the church comes from a former church building that stood on the other side of the adjacent water at Het Steiger. That church was completely destroyed during the large bombing of Rotterdam by the German Air Force on 14 May 1940. The first stone of the current church was laid on 2 May 1959. The executive architect is Chris Knol (1926-2014). The church is managed by the Dominicans, who have been active in Rotterdam since the 14th century. The right side entrance to the church provides access to the Mary Chapel.

The depiction of Our Lady is called “Mary, Protectress of the City of Rotterdam”. The image shows Mary with a wide mantle, protecting the city. Beneath the Virgin Mary are depicted, among other things, the tower of the Laurenskerk, the Euromast, and the White House; the first skyscraper not only of the Netherlands, but of all of Europe. The special depiction of Mary was created by artist Gérard Héman (1914-1992), who worked and lived in Rotterdam for many years.

The church has been a State Monument since 2013.
