Achterbroek is a village that belongs to the municipality of Kalmthout. On Roosendaalsebaan there is a chapel with a Lourdes grotto inside.
On the site of the current chapel, there once stood an altar for prayer and rest. This place of prayer was already there before 1881, and it also served as a resting altar during the procession on kermiszondag (fair Sunday).
In 1931, Willem Herrijgers had the existing altar removed, and the current chapel was built in its place. This chapel was then also named “Het Herrijgerskapelleke”.
Above the entrance to the chapel is written “Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us”. On the altar is the Lourdes Grotto, which is dark in colour. The grotto displays beautiful statues of Mary and Bernadette and is adorned with flowers. Candles can also be lit on the altar. Benches are placed in front of the grotto, and visitors can sit to pray, rest, or collect their thoughts.
The chapel and Lourdes grotto are well maintained and can be visited daily.
