De Lutte – Lourdes Grotto

In De Lutte, the Lourdes grotto is situated by the church, graveyard and Kerkebos, featuring a processional path with small chapels.

The Lourdes grotto is semi-circular in shape and is constructed from Bentheimer sandstone, with a sandstone floor. Bentheimer sandstone originates from a quarry just across the border in Germany. The stone has a warm colour, is versatile and adorns the structure. The statue of Mary is made of plaster and stands at a height of about three metres. Mary is dressed in white, with a blue cloak, headscarf, wide band around the waist and rosary. In the large, lower niche stands an altar table made of hardstone.

The cave is largely overgrown with ivy, giving it a green appearance all year round. Several benches were installed in 2003. This was done to mark the bicentenary of the Saint Plechelm Parish.

At the grotto the image of Bernadette is missing and candles are not burning.

Volunteers from the graveyard team maintain the Lourdes grotto and as a result the grotto looks good.
