Susteren – Lourdes Grotto – Heide

The Lourdes grotto is located in the hamlet of Heide, which belongs to Susteren and is situated in the municipality of Echt-Susteren.

The Lourdes grotto is made of natural stone. The statue of Mary stands on the right in a niche at a height of almost two metres, and flowers bloom at her feet. In the lower space stands a natural stone altar with a crucifix. A crucifix is placed on top of the grotto. There is a bench in front of the grotto. The likeness of the seer Bernadette is missing. No candles are lit at the grotto. The grotto is well maintained and therefore makes a well-cared-for impression.

In 1962, the Lourdes grotto was built by a man known as “Grandpa” Habets from Hulsberg. He is a very devout man and visits many pilgrimage sites. He makes these journeys by bicycle, moped or on foot, such as to Rome.
