The chapel on the Elzenweg was built of brick in 1933. It is a Neo-Gothic building with a pitched roof. Inside the space is a Lourdes grotto made of rough natural stone. The large statue of Mary is a characteristic Lourdes statue with her head raised, wearing white clothes with a blue sash and a rosary. The small statue of Bernadette depicts her with a candle. The statues and grotto are placed behind a lattice. The whole is a colourful scene. A cross is fixed against the gable at the front of the chapel.
On a built-in stone on the front of the chapel is the text SM (Sancta Maria) “Tell me, good Lady, who You are! ‘I am the Immaculate Conception”.".

A story is connected to the creation of the chapel. Jeupke Denis from Susteren has an infection in his legs. Doctors cannot help him. He goes to Lourdes and promises Mary there to build a small chapel for Her in Susteren if he is cured. Back home, both legs are healed. The man keeps his word and ensures that the chapel is built. It is still maintained by members of the Denis family.
A fence has been installed around the chapel named “Kapel aan het Hout”. There is a bench by the chapel. There are green spaces near the chapel, including bushes and 3 large lime trees.
Park the car near the chapel with the Lourdes grotto in Op de Walle near number 9, then cross the bridge and turn left onto Elzenweg. After about 100 metres along the cycle/walking path, you will find the chapel with the grotto.
In and around Susteren there are cycling and walking opportunities. This is the Netherlands at its narrowest. Within an hour, you can walk from Belgium, through the Netherlands, to Germany. It is a 5-kilometre walk.
Address of the chapel with the Lourdes grotto: Elzenweg, 6114RB Susteren.
