The title for Mary of “Admirable Mother” dates from the 16th century. This title appears in the Litany of Loreto.
On 18 November 1574, the first Marian sodality was founded by Jakob Rem (1546-1618). Rem is a Jesuit priest (Societas Jesu, Society of Jesus) of the Jesuit order. Jakob Rem is a Catholic priest and youth worker operating in Bavaria.
In Ingolstadt, Bavaria, on 6 April 1604, the Colloquium Marianum Society will sing the Litany of Loreto in the chapel of the Jesuit college of the Catholic University. This Marian singing and speaking group will do so before the icon “Salus Populi Romani” (the salvation of the Roman People).
Jakob Rem has been wondering for some time whichMarian epithet is the most beautiful. He is also present in the chapel and upon hearing the Litany of Loreto sung, he hears the invocation “Mater Admirabilis” (Admirable Mother) which immediately enraptures him. Suddenly, Mary appears to him. The father hears Mary say that the title “Mater Admirabilis” is Her favourite. Thereupon, he asks the choir to repeat this title twice more. This title is then sung three times and thus the name “Thrice Admirable Mother” is created. It is also referred to as “Thrice Wonderful Mother”.
