Mary Calendar – August

The following dates are important in August:

1 August

Second and final appearance to Vincenza Pasini (1356-1431) on Monte Berico in Vicenza, Italy (1428).

4 August

The first procession in Lourdes, led by Father Peyremale. The route goes from the then parish church to the grotto of Massabielle. On this day, the statue of Mary in the Grotto is blessed by Bishop Laurence (1864).

5 August

5 August 352: Our Lady of the Snows. Apparition of Mary on the Roman Esquiline Hill. The ground plan for a church to be built was drawn in the snow by Mary. A church is built there and consecrated on 5 August 434. This church later becomes the first basilica named Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major), also called Santa Maria ad Nives (Saint Mary of the Snows).

5 August

5 August 1888: Coronation of the Mary statue in Oostakker-Lourdes by Hendrik Karel Lambrecht (1848-1889), Bishop of Ghent (1888-1889).

7th August

7 August 1932: Coronation of the statue of Our Lady of Nijmegen during the Marian Congress in Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, from 6 to 8 August 1932.

10 August

The first appearance of Mary in Cotignac, France, to Jean de la Baume, a woodcutter. Mary asks him to persuade clergymen and town councillors to build a chapel on Mount Verdaille. This chapel is to be named “Notre-Dame de Grâces” / ”Our Lady of Graces” (1519).

11 August

Crowning of the effigy of Mary in Montagnaga, Italy (1894) by Eugenio Carlo Valussi (1837-1903), Bishop of Trento (1886-1903). The main headdress incorporates approximately 1,300 precious stones. The bishop recognises the apparitions of Mary in Montagnaga.

14 August

Consecration of the Chapel of Divine Mercy in the Polish pilgrimage site of Licheń (1968).

15 August

The Assumption of Mary in the Catholic Church. In the Eastern Church, it is called the “Dormition of the Mother of God”. Many processions are held on 15 August, such as in Belgium and Italy.

17 August

17 August 1913: Coronation of the grace image of Mary at the pilgrimage site in Verne (Germany) by Karl Jozef Schulte (1871-1941), Bishop of Paderborn (1910-1920). He later became Archbishop of Cologne (1920-1941) and Cardinal (1921-1941).

18 August

Consecration of Chapel IV with the Assumption of Mary at the pilgrimage site with the Holy Mountain in Ossuccio, Italy (1665).

19 August

Fourth apparition of Mary in Fatima (1917) and this time in Valinhos and not in the Cova da Iria. The apparition begins with a flash of light. The apparition was actually supposed to take place on August 13th. However, the children are then held for questioning about Mary's visits.

21 August

21 August (1879): in the evening, 15 believers in Knock, Ireland, saw an apparition against a church wall. Mary appeared dressed in white. Joseph and the evangelist John were also seen. The people also discerned the lamb, which stood on an altar with a cross behind it, surrounded by angels.

22 August

Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of heaven and earth. The octave day, as the eighth and final day of the feast of the Assumption of Mary (15 August).

25 August

Crowning of the statue of grace of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel (1872). In 2022, Mary receives a new crown.

26 August

Feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa (Tschenstochau) in Poland.

27 August

27 August 1962: in the Italian Brindisi-Jaddico, the ancient wall again shines brightly, illuminating the entire surroundings. Teodoro D’Amici (1912-1993) sees the fresco of Mary in the light of the wall.

29 August

29 August 1664: The Lady of the Apparitions in Laus, France, makes herself known to the seer Benoîte Rencurel (1647-1718) by saying: “I am the Virgin Mary, the Mother of my beloved Son.”

30 August

30 August 1620: In Biella, Italy, the statue named “La Madonna d’Oropa” is crowned. This is the first statue of Mary to be crowned with great ceremony.

31 August

Mary, Mother and Mediatrix of Grace. She acts as an intercessor with God in heaven, as she first did during her life on earth. In this way she obtains many graces for people.
