The Lourdes Grotto in Averbode is located in the Maria Park, which was laid out next to the abbey. The grotto was built in 1936 on the highest point of the sloping Maria Park. It is a faithful replica of the original grotto in Lourdes, France. The grotto was made by Alfons Janssen (1880-1959) from Westmeerbeek, which is a sub-municipality of Hulshout and is located in the province of Antwerp. Later, the grotto was restored by his grandson Freddy Janssen (born 1943).
The large space in front of the cave once frequently served as a venue for outdoor celebrations.
The statue of Bernadette Soubirous is missing. It was the work of vandals. The park is accessible day and night, and because no investment has ever been made in security, damage to statues occurs. Unfortunately, the Maria Park is therefore not closed at night. The grounds give a neglected impression and have been stripped of much of their grandeur. This is a painful realisation.
In 2022, the Maria Park was recognised as a protected monument. This may eventually lead to better protection for the park and safeguard it against vandalism.
