Bachem is a wine village, belongs to the municipality of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The chapel was built in 1948 out of gratitude from the local shoemaker Karl Dresen, because he returned from the Second World War (1939-1945) intact. In 1949 the chapel was consecrated. The bell tower on the chapel was placed in 1958. In 1961 the Lourdes grotto was created in the chapel. The Mary Chapel then has the name Lourdes Chapel. In 1988 there was a fire in the chapel and the entire interior was destroyed. Within one month the interior of the Lourdes Chapel was renovated.
The lava stones give the cave a natural look. Many candles are lit in the Lourdes Cave and the statues of Mary and Bernadette Soubirous are kept in candle light all day long. Ex votos are attached to the walls in the cave, which are expressions of gratitude to Our Lady. There are benches for visitors to rest, pray and be in the presence of Mary.
Next to the Lourdes Chapel flows a stream, namely the Bachemer Bach.
The Lourdes Chapel, containing the Lourdes Grotto, receives visitors daily. Hiking trails have been set up for the walkers in this wooded area.
Bachem with its associated wine region is located between Bad Neuenahr and Ahrweiler. The Lourdes Chapel is located outside the built-up area in the Bachemer Wiesental at the end of the long Himmelsburger Strasse, which is becoming increasingly narrower. Parking is available at the Lourdes Chapel with the Lourdes Grotto. Visiting the Lourdes Chapel with the Lourdes Grotto is highly recommended.
Address: Himmelsburger Strasse, 53474 Bachem (Bad Neuenahr – Ahrweiler).
