At Christmas, my thoughts are mainly with young mother Mary. She has just given birth to a Son who will bring about a different world.
The accessible Mother of the newborn Jesus is particularly worth highlighting at Christmas. Mary was nine months pregnant, always unmarried, and travelled for a long time, under difficult circumstances. This reminds me of the many people who are fleeing today. The world then seems so much like it was about 2,000 years ago. I therefore see Mary as a symbol of carrying on in a challenging context.
The Virgin Mary presents a powerful image. Mary is the Mother present in human form, who wants to be that for everyone. Our Lady fulfils her commission and then she is an immensely strong Woman. She does not run away, but does what she has promised.
At Christmas, I am in prayer to Mary. I thank Her for her many efforts. I am also grateful to Her that I too may be a child of Hers. At Christmas, it is in Mary's hand to go to another world. That is where I want to go...!
