In Essen, the border town with the Netherlands, there are several Lourdes grottos. In Nollekensstraat, near the De Bijster Residential Care Centre, there is a large Lourdes grotto at the back of the garden, by the rear of the kitchen and where suppliers deliver goods.
The grotto is made of large blocks of concrete and has a niche for lighting candles. In front of the grotto, there are benches for resting a while. Maria stands in the left niche at almost 2 metres in height, and little Bernadette is placed on a pedestal.
The Lourdes Grotto is free to visit.
Address: Nollekensstraat, take the road next to number 19, Essen.
