On the edge of the town of Genk, there is the hamlet of Klotbroek and there stands a well-maintained Lourdes grotto.
For the first time, a Lourdes grotto was built in this part of the town in 1960. A stone commemorates this with the words: “Out of love for Our Lady, April 1960”.
Due to new plans, the cave must disappear. Subsequently, the cave was broken down stone by stone and rebuilt at its current location. A memorial stone commemorates this with the inscription: “reconstruction by neighborhood residents in December 2014”. The second cave therefore has the same stones as the first.
A large statue of Mary stands in the upper part; she has her hands together in a prayer position. One can spend a long time looking at this statue and praying, because there are benches by the cave.
There is no statue of visionary Bernadette Soubirous at the Lourdes grotto and no candles are burning in the grotto.
The well-maintained Lourdes Grot is located near the large Schemmersberg nature reserve. There are many hiking opportunities here. A visit is recommended.
Address: Wetzandstraat, opposite number 3, 3600 Genk.
