The Lourdes grotto in Itteren was built in 1930, and a small altar is placed in the low space diagonally beneath the statue of Mary. The effigy of Our Lady stands in a niche at a height of about 2 metres. The grotto is made of silex stones, which are flint stones. Since the effigy of seer Bernadette Soubirous is missing, it is in fact a Marian grotto. The grotto is almost entirely overgrown with ivy. Flowers on the altar make the grotto colourful.
The Lourdes Grotto is situated behind the church, which is dedicated to Saint Martin, at the edge of the graveyard, which is a monument. The grotto is also accessible via a gate from the graveyard on Ruyterstraat, opposite number 26.
In Pasestraat in Itteren stands a Marian chapel, to the southwest of the village, near the River Maas.
Itteren is a village with a church, belonging to the municipality of Maastricht and located on the right bank of the river Maas. The beautifully situated hamlet is to the north of Maastricht and to the west of Meerssen, close to the Belgian border.
Address: Brigidastraat 66, 6223HD Itteren (municipality of Maastricht).
