A particularly beautiful Lourdes grotto is located in a chapel opposite number 69 Hemelrijklaan.
Above the entrance, a stone is set in the wall with the text “AVE MARIA”. On the door, a piece of paper reads that the chapel is only open on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Lourdes Grotto is located in a chapel built of yellow stone. A stone cross is affixed to the chapel. On either side of the interior of the chapel, the walls are constructed with white stones. A wooden roof can be seen above the grotto.
The grotto is built at the end of the chapel. Mary stands in the high niche, her mouth open as she gazes upwards. Mary and the visionary Bernadette Soubirous stand behind a low railing. At the bottom of the grotto, in the large niche, statuettes have been placed, including those of Mary and Jesus.
The whole forms a colourful image with Mary, Bernadette, flowers and benches, where visitors can take a seat to pray to Our Lady, reflect or rest for a while. The Lourdes grotto gives a well-maintained impression.
Address: opposite Hemelrijklaan 69, on the corner of Schepen Veraartstraat, opposite Hemelrijkweg 1, 2910 Essen.
