The following dates are important in March:
1 March
Twelfth apparition to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes. Bernadette has a blessed candle with her and approximately 1500 onlookers are at the Grotto. The apparition says that Bernadette does not have her own rosary in her hand, but that of a sick friend. Afterwards, Bernadette drinks some water and washes herself at the spring (1858).
2nd March
1933 - Eighth and final apparition in Banneux. Mary says to Mariette Beco: “I am the Mother of the Saviour, Mother of God. Pray a great deal. Farewell.” Mary appears sad, blesses Mariette, places her hands on her and disappears.
In Lourdes, the 13th apparition to Bernadette Soubirous takes place. She is told: “Go and tell the priests to build a chapel here and that people must come in procession.” (1858).
3 March
Day of the 14th apparition at Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous. Bernadette is carrying a consecrated candle for the last time and around 100 interested onlookers are present. The Apparition repeats the words that a chapel is to be built. Bernadette asks “The Lady” for her name, to which Mary smiles (1858).
4 March
-1858- The 15th apparition to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes. This is the last day of the *14* about which Mary spoke during the first apparitions. This time, around 20,000 people are present at the grotto. Bernadette speaks of “the white girl” who smiles when she asks for her name. The apparition again speaks of a chapel that must be built.
7 March
The first appearance of Mary to Vincenza Pasini (1356-1431) on Monte Berico in Vicenza, Italy (1426).
13 March
Pius IX, Pope in the period 1846-1878, born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti (1792-1878), awarded the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Lourdes the title of basilica. This is the upper basilica (1874).
14 March
-1893- Leo XIII, Pope (1878-1903), born Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci (1810-1903), elevates the Confraternity of Our Lady of Consolation at Heppeneert (B) to archconfraternity.
18 March
The Church of the Apparitions in Laus, France, was elevated to the status of a basilica (1894).
19 March
Lodewijk-Jozef Kerkhofs (1878-1962), Bishop of Liège (1927-1961), authorised the veneration of the Virgin of the Poor in Banneux (Belgium), who appeared eight times to Mariette Beco in 1933 (1942).
25th March
The Annunciation. Mary receives a visit from an angel who tells her she will conceive a son. Mary asks, ”How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel replies that her son, Jesus, will not be conceived by human means, as he is of the Holy Spirit.
Pope Francis is the first Pope to specifically consecrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary to Russia and Ukraine (2022). Mary had already explicitly requested this in Fatima in 1917.
25th March
16th apparition in Lourdes. Bernadette Soubirous asks the “Lady” her name four times. The Apparition says: “I am the Immaculate Conception”. Bernadette does not understand these words and goes to tell the said words to the priest (1858).
25th March
First message from Maria to Renato Baron in Schio, Italy (1985).
26 March
Second appearance of Mary to Renato Baron in Schio, Italy. The apparition identifies herself and says she is the Mother of God (1985).
27 March
Our Lady is the patron saint of Walloon athletes, by a decree from 1953 by Pius XII, who was Pope between 1939 and 1958 and was born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli (1876-1958).
31 March
-1804- The image of Mary “Star of the Sea” returns to Maastricht, after being kept safe for several years from the danger of French revolutionaries. The effigy is placed in the church of Saint Nicholas, in the centre of the city.
