Chapel of Our Lady of the Field in Minderhout

In Minderhout, near Hoogstraten, stands the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, known as Our Lady of the Field. The name is likely derived from its original location, outside the built-up area amongst the then-farming lands. In 1650, Theodoor Van Dyck (1605-1668), with the religious name Waltmannus and parish priest of Minderhout (1640-1668), commissioned the construction of the chapel. He is also referred to as Father Waltman and is the younger brother of the renowned painter Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). This priest consecrated the chapel on 2 August 1651.

The chapel has been enlarged several times. In 1688 the nave was extended, in 1691 the chancel was enlarged and the sacristy was added, and in 1693 the portal was constructed against the west facade. In 1696, the south transept was extended, giving the chapel its current size.

Joannes Ferdinandus Van Beughem (1630-1699), Bishop of Antwerp (1679-1699), consecrated the chapel on 26 May 1694. The oak statuette of Mary is presumed to be from around 1500, and the maker is unknown. The statuette stands on a blue globe, thus connecting Mary to heaven and earth. The infant Jesus was added later. Above the image of Mary hangs a white dove, symbolising the Holy Spirit.

In 1745, a new sacristy was built on the initiative of Reverend Joannes della Faille, pastor from 1732 to 1759. The chapel features some beautiful stained-glass windows.

Since 1950, the chapel has been protected as a monument. The chapel receives visitors every day. Mary was often invoked there against fever.

The detached, beautifully located chapel is open daily and is situated at Kapeldreef, Minderhout, 2322 Hoogstraten.
