In Monschau, there is a unique Lourdes grotto located in a special spot.

The Lourdes Grotto is located opposite “Burg Monschau” (Monschau Castle), which has a history dating back to the 13th century. The grotto near the castle is situated behind a Marian chapel, known as the “Ave Maria Kapelle”. The Lourdes Grotto, featuring statues of Mary and Bernadette Soubirous, is located behind the chapel. The Lourdes Grotto is best viewed by standing at the rear of the chapel, where a glass partition ensures an unobstructed view of the grotto.

What is striking about the chapel is that the walls of this grotto are covered with tiles. The plates that have been put up are expressions of gratitude to Our Lady. The Lourdes grotto was built in 1911 on the corner of Schlosskehr and Unterer Kalk.

In Monschau, just outside the Old Town, stands the St. Antonius Chapel with its small bell tower. The small building is beautifully situated near the River Rur. The chapel is open daily. This chapel is owned by the “Antoniusbrot-Vereins” (St. Anthony's Bread Association). The main objective of this association is the weekly distribution of bread to families in need in Monschau.

In the centre of the bustling town of Monschau, the “St. Mariä Geburt Kirche” can be visited. This parish church is located on Kirchstrasse and features pews arranged in a semi-circle within an adjoining area. The adjacent church displays not only an image of Mary with Child but also a poignant depiction of Mary and her deceased Son.
