Munstergeleen – Father Karel Chapel

The chapel is part of the Carolus Houben Mill building complex, dedicated to Father Karel, born Johannes Andreas (Karel) Houben (1821-1893). He was canonised in 2007. Father Karel is from Limburg and the son of a miller. He joined the Passionist Fathers and was sent to Ireland, where he gained great renown. Since his canonisation, a chapel has stood by Karel Houben's birthplace.

The chapel of Saint Pater Karel displays beautiful images of Mary. In the brown structure of the altar is a dark effigy of Mary and Child, both are crowned. Also in the chapel is a small, colourful, round stained-glass window with Mary and her Little Son.

Stations of the Cross, including the station “Jesus meets his Mother”, next to the Pater Karel Chapel in Munstergeleen

The Stations of the Cross display stations designed and executed by Jos Hermans (1930-2017) from Nuth. He was a versatile artist, active as a sculptor, stained-glass artist, draughtsman, and muralist, among other things. The images of the stations are here for their third stay. The stations were made for installation in the “Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal” church in Beek (1962-2000). In 2000, the artworks were donated to the “Saint Anthony of Padua” church in Sittard, which was deconsecrated in 2011. In 2016, the stations were given to the Pater Karel Chapel and found their place along the Stations of the Cross path, next to the chapel.

The chapel is located on the route to the Spanish pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela.
