Rossum – Mariagrot

On the church square in Rossum, near the monumental church of Saint Plechelm and next to the graveyard, stands a Lourdes grotto.

At the origin of the Lourdes grotto lies a remarkable story. Jan Groeneveld has an industrial accident and is disabled by a fall of 6 metres. He has a sister who is a Franciscan nun, and she encourages him to build a small chapel and a grotto near his house. In 1978, the Lourdes grotto is completed. The statue of Mary standing in the grotto is presumably a gift from the Franciscan sisters of Noord-Deurningen, near Denekamp.

In 1990 Jan Groeneveld passes away and after that the grotto moves to the church square. The Lourdes grotto is consecrated by Hendrikus Johannes Thijert (1929-1999), parish priest of Rossum from 1980 until 1999.

In 2013, the effigy of Mary breaks when a woman accidentally drops the statue as her husband wants to take a photo of her with the statue of Mary in her arms. The statue of Our Lady and Child is restored.

In the church you can see beautiful stained-glass windows from 1941, as well as a magnificent statue of Mary. Also in the church's chapel is a particularly striking statue of Our Lady.

The village of Rossum belongs to the municipality of Dinkelland, and is situated in Twente and the province of Overijssel.
