The church building, which is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, is already mentioned in 1144. The church has suffered greatly over the past centuries from fires and acts of war.
In the main choir, the Coronation of Mary is depicted among other things in a colourful stained-glass window from 1954 by Frédéric (Fritz) Roderburg (1884-1963).
The Pietà depicts Mother Mary with the deceased Jesus on her lap. This statue is surrounded by 7 paintings, which represent Our Lady of Sorrows. The paintings were made around 1940 by Father Andres Leon Bosteels (1901-1970).
In the church, a photographic reproduction of a 1916 watercolour painting by painter and draughtsman Joe (Joseph Alphonse Marie) English (1882-1918) can also be seen. He is one of the Flemish IJzer symbols, and his effigy is sculpted on the Paxpoort in Diksmuide. The original painting hangs in the IJzertoren museum.
The image Our Lady of Perpetual Help dates from 1955 and was created by Lionel Poupaert (1900-1989). It is a seated Madonna and Child.
The painting “Flight into Egypt” from 1895. The High Altar of Our Lady is by Jules Joseph Fonteyne (1878-1964), and the painting is by the artist Egide Godfried Guffens (1823-1901).
