On the first Sunday after All Saints' Day on 1 November, the Kaarskensprocessie (Candle Procession) is held in Scherpenheuvel. The history of this procession goes back centuries. Pilgrimages began in Scherpenheuvel as early as 1633. Therefore, it is an age-old tradition. The reason for the origin of the Kaarskensprocessie lies in the year 1629, and this also proves the existence of a very old, intangible heritage. In that year, the population suffered greatly from a severe plague epidemic, which claimed many victims. Due to this severe epidemic, believers decided to seek solace in Mary. They carried her statue around the church of Scherpenheuvel, accompanying it by carrying candles. It was considered a miracle that after the procession, the plague disappeared. It is also claimed that the procession originated from lighting candles on All Souls' Day, which falls on 2 November. The candles then serve as a tribute from bereaved relatives to their deceased relatives, friends, and acquaintances. The origin of the Kaarskensprocessie is also referred to as occurring in the year 1734, when another epidemic raged, and Mary was asked for help in a procession. Most pilgrims attribute the origin of the procession to the year 1629.

The day of the Candle Procession begins in the morning with a Eucharist service in the basilica. At 3.00 PM there is a vespers service in the packed basilica, featuring organ music, a choir, the Blessed Sacrament placed on the altar, and then the statue of Mary is placed on the altar. Following this, the procession participants leave the basilica. In front of the basilica, the ancient statue of Mary is displayed, and a brief ceremony takes place. The procession then sets off, following a route through the streets surrounding the basilica. Hundreds of pilgrims take part in the procession, including members of scouting groups, clergy, pilgrims of all ages, and of course, the renowned image of Our Lady. At 4.00 PM, a closing ceremony is held in the basilica, and the image of Our Lady is returned to the main altar.
